Specialist Critical Care and Medical / Surgical Speech and Language Therapist

Job Summary
As a Dysphagia Specialist in this Acute Hospital Speech Therapy role, you will provide an effective and evidenced-based Speech & Language service to adult in-patients with communication and/or swallowing difficulties. This Critical Care SLT position involves managing patients on ventilators and those with tracheostomy tubes in-situ within medical and surgical settings. You will operate as a highly specialist, autonomous practitioner, independently prioritizing an in-patient caseload while overseeing the management of junior staff within the SLT department. This role is ideal for those looking for Medical and Surgical SLT opportunities and involves participation in service development and deputizing for the Principal SLT as required.
Person Specification
Education & Qualifications
Essential
- – Recognised degree or equivalent in Speech & Language Therapy (Tested via Application).
- – Registered with the Health Professions Council (HCPC) and the Royal College of Speech & Language Therapists (RCSLT), holding a valid HCPC licence to practice (Tested via Application).
- – Successful completion of highly specialist short courses in the interpretation of Video fluoroscopy and/or FEES (Tested via Application).
- – Completion of accredited postgraduate study in swallowing and tracheostomy management, such as laryngectomy or cervical auscultation (Tested via Application/Interview).
- – Evidence of completed RCSLT competencies in video fluoroscopy to level KSF 4 and/or FEES scoping competencies (Tested via Application/Interview).
- – Postgraduate training in Supervision and Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (IRMER) (Tested via Application).
Desirable
- – Member of a relevant Clinical Excellence Network (CEN), such as tracheostomy (Tested via Application).
Experience
Essential
- – Extensive post-graduation experience in SLT practice with adults presenting with acquired communication and swallowing disorders (Tested via Application/Interview).
- – Relevant SLT practice within an acute hospital environment (Tested via Application/Interview).
- – Proven competence in the areas of Dysphagia, Dysphasia, and Dysarthria (Tested via Application/Interview).
- – Competence in tracheostomy management, including the management of ventilator-dependent patients (Tested via Application/Interview).
- – Highly specialist experience in therapeutic interventions relevant to tracheostomy care, including speaking valves and ventilatory/cuff status (Tested via Application/Interview).
- – Experience leading a Video fluoroscopy clinic, including the interpretation of results and report writing (Tested via Application/Interview).
- – Experience in clinical training, teaching, and drafting clinical protocols or pathways (Tested via Application/Interview).
- – Experience in supervising less experienced SLTs or students and developing quality improvement projects (Tested via Application/Interview).
