This expansive infrastructure is split strategically across specialized areas, including Ward 1 (focused entirely on high-volume acute trauma orthopaedic care), Ward 2 (a pristine, MRSA-free elective orthopaedic unit), and the Clinical Suite (premium single en-suite recovery rooms). Key Clinical Duties and Operational Responsibilities

Ward Management and Day-to-Day Inpatient Care

  • – Assume day-to-day clinical responsibility for the comprehensive medical management of inpatients across both the active acute trauma ward (Ward 1) and the elective surgical ward (Ward 2).
  • – Conduct detailed, structured morning ward rounds under the supervision of Registrars and Consultants, executing precise management plans, prescribing necessary post-operative medications, and ordering appropriate diagnostic imaging or laboratory investigations.
  • – Lead the rapid clinical assessment and stabilization of acute, pre- and post-operative surgical patients, promptly escalating any deteriorating individuals to senior clinical decision-makers.
  • – Coordinate cross-functional care pathways alongside the multidisciplinary team (MDT), actively collaborating with physiotherapists, occupational therapists, and the Warwickshire Team (WT) to minimize length of stay and facilitate safe, early patient discharge.
  • – Undertake rigorous pre-operative clinical assessments within the Pre-Operative Assessment Clinic (POAC) to guarantee that elective joint replacement patients are fully medically optimized for theatre.

Theatre Exposure and Surgical Assistance

  • – Actively scrub-in and assist Consultant Surgeons and Specialist Registrars on a broad spectrum of complex surgical procedures within a state-of-the-art theatre suite.
  • – Gain direct operative exposure to primary and revision total joint replacements (hip, knee, and shoulder arthroplasty), upper limb soft tissue alterations, arthroscopic knee reconstructions, foot and ankle procedures, and a high volume of acute trauma surgeries (including dynamic hip screw fixation, intramedullary nailing, and open reduction internal fixation).
  • – Develop core surgical techniques under direct supervision, including meticulous tissue handling, wound closure, joint aspiration, local anaesthetic infiltration, and advanced splinting/cast application.

On-Call, Emergency Department, and Admissions

  • – Participate fully in the departmental junior on-call rota, providing high-quality, comprehensive cover for the Accident and Emergency (A&E) Department and general wards.
  • – Rapidly review, clerk, and manage acute musculoskeletal referrals coming from the Emergency Department, clarifying mechanisms of injury, interpreting complex diagnostic radiographs/CT scans, and instituting immediate emergency management (such as reduction of dislocations and joint immobilisation).
  • – Support the innovative Virtual Fracture Clinic (VFC) pathways, ensuring accurate digital and clinical records are compiled for consultant-led virtual triage the following morning.

Clinical Governance, Education, and Professional Development

  • – Actively engage in the department’s robust educational infrastructure, participating in weekly teaching sessions, grand rounds, multi-disciplinary X-ray review meetings, and morbidity and mortality (M&M) conferences.
  • – Proactively initiate or assist with departmental clinical audits, Quality Improvement Projects (QIPs), and research studies overseen by the academic department, with opportunities to present findings at regional or national levels.
  • – Maintain an up-to-date professional portfolio, participating in annual appraisals, completing workplace-based assessments (WBA/sBA), and fulfilling Continuing Professional Development (CPD) mandates.

Person Specification and Essential Criteria

To be considered for this competitive junior surgical position, applicants must strictly demonstrate the following professional credentials:

  • – Professional Licensure: Must hold valid Full General Medical Council (GMC) Registration with a current, clean Licence to Practise.
  • – Clinical Experience: Demonstrable post-graduate clinical experience within the UK National Health Service (NHS), with preferred prior exposure to a dedicated Trauma & Orthopaedics or Emergency Medicine rotation at the Foundation Year 2 (FY2) or Senior House Officer (SHO) grade.
  • – Core Skills: Excellent clinical acumen in managing acutely unwell surgical and medical patients, basic surgical suturing skills, and a solid understanding of basic radiation safety and IR(ME)R rules.
  • – Life Support Certification: Valid and current Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) or Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient (CCrISP) certification is highly desirable.
