Community Care
Community Care staffing
As a Community Nurse, your job is to provide home-based, high-quality care to patients outside of the hospital environment. Community Nursing is an extremely rewarding career and provides vulnerable patients with the freedom and security of living a better quality of life, within their community and ensuring they do not have to go into hospital unnecessarily. As a Community Nurse, your communication and interpersonal skills need to be exceptional as you will be dealing with patients in their home and personal environments. The ability to listen and relate to people of different backgrounds and cultures will also aid your role.
Community Nurses play a vital role in many different parts of the community as:
- GP Nurses
- Care Home Nurses
- Health Visitors
- Occupational Health Nurses
- Public Health Nurses
- Executive Nurses
- Nurse Educators
- Community Mental Health Nurses
- Community Children’s Nurses
- Learning Disability Nurses
- Homeless Health Nurses
A role where no two days are the same, Community Carers work extremely varied shifts and deal with a variety of patient health issues and conditions. To be eligible for Community Nursing jobs, you will need between 1-2 years’ experience as a qualified Adult Nurse and a Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) approved degree is essential. It will also help to have completed, or at least be working towards, qualifications in leadership and management.
Nurses working in a community role will typically:
- Take urine and blood samples, administer medicine, dress wounds, and set up drips
- Provide management for registered and non-registered staff, and those who are training
- Assess patients and plan for their continuous care
- Carry out clinical nursing procedures
- Provide emotional support to patients and families
